Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant found himself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons this week.
Following an unfortunate gun-related incident, he is now suspended indefinitely and is facing a potentially larger punishment from the league.
Beyond that, Morant is also facing a massive potential prison sentence.
Just when it seemed like things couldn’t possibly get any worse for the 23-year-old – they did.
This week on an episode of ‘Undisputed’ FOX sports opinion analyst Skip Bayless linked Morant to the Crips street gang.
“And remember, he’s thrown up the Crips sign, I’ve seen him throw it up two or three times, I’ve probably missed some other times,” Bayless said.
“What does that mean? Does that mean he wants to associate with the Crips? Or he got initiated by the Crips? Or he has a dream of being a Crip? I don’t know.
“I’m just throwing this out – that, are we missing the boat here that that’s just who he’s been from the start and we keep saying, ‘No, you’re just associated with the wrong people,’ when he’s actually part of the wrong people.”
To go from being a future face of the NBA and taking Drake’s girl to where Morant is today is incredible.
Obviously this isn’t the first time an athlete has been accused of gang ties. Sometimes the allegations are accurate, whereas other times – like with John Wall – they are not.
But you never really want to be in a place where these things are even brought up. The fact that Morant is in that place is telling.

Will Morant use this most recent incident as a much-needed wake up call?
Can he clean up his act before he does irreparable damage to his once-promising career?
An answer to both those questions should come sooner rather than later.
