Dennis Schroder and D’Angelo Russell were teammates on the Los Angeles Lakers last year, but there appears to be no love lost between them.
Recently, Russell made headlines when he blamed Schroder for his poor relationship with Lakers head coach, Darvin Ham.
“[Schroder’s] relationship with Darvin is the reason I couldn’t have a relationship with Darvin,” Russell said to Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
“When I was struggling, I would’ve been able to come to the coach and say, ‘Bro, this is what we should do. Like, I can help you.’ Instead, there was no dialogue. … I just accepted it.”
Russell then closed it out with a parting shot at Schroder: “And we got swept and I’m here and he’s not. And I like our chances.”

Schroder, understandably, didn’t take kindly to Russell’s sentiments.
“I don’t understand it. But at the end of the day, it just shows off immaturity,” he told the New York Post’s Brian Lewis. “You’re not really mature if you’re just keeping somebody’s name in his mouth and just running it. I don’t understand.”
This back and forth certainly puts an exchange from earlier this year between Russell and Schroder in perspective:

It is a well-known thing around the NBA that Ham favors his own guys. His beef with Austin Reaves is the most notable example of him playing favorites, but not the only one.
So it is totally understandable why Russell felt like Ham would always have Schroder’s back over his.
That said – he likely didn’t handle it in the best way.
Will Russell and Schroder ultimately find a way to let bygones be bygones and move on from this ugly spat? Time will tell.
