Cleveland Cavaliers Are Firing John Beilein
The Cleveland Cavaliers are firing John Beilein sooner rather than later.
Beilein was brought in this summer with the idea that he would be able to impart the sort of stability on the rebuilding Cavs that he did at Michigan.
Unfortunately, it looks like that is not happening.
According to a new report from Shams Charania and Joe Vardon of The Athletic, players are growing increasingly unhappy with Beilein.
Apparently the sticking point is that some players feel that Beilein, with no NBA experience prior to this, is trying too hard to create a college-like environment where one does not belong.
A player was quoted in the report as saying that the Cavs’ other assistant coaches are “definitely more prepared for the NBA.”
The criticism did not stop there, though.
“Guys drowned out his voice, and when guys start searching for the next in line for help, I believe you’ve lost them,” the player continued.
Through 20 games Cleveland is now 5-15. The team has lost 10 of its 11 games and confidence in the coaching staff appears to be eroding on a daily basis.
There is something to be said for not immediately firing a coach, but sometimes you also need to cut your losses. Yes, it looks bad, but sometimes it’s necessary.
Beilein’s offense simply does not seem like it is designed to optimize the talent on the team right now and players seem unhappy with little things like how he names his plays.
Apparently the former Michigan coach calls out the names of wild animals when he wants to run certain plays, which apparently is a no-no in the big leagues.
At 66 years old, it will likely be hard for Beilein to change this late in the game.
