Blake Griffin joined the Boston Celtics last year in what was widely accepted as a blatant attempt at ring-chasing.
The 34-year-old has made it clear in recent years that he would love to win that ever-elusive NBA title, by whatever means necessary.
Griffin averaged 4.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in limited minutes last season, but his impact was felt beyond the stats. He was a veteran leader on a Celtics squad in desperate need of one, leading some to speculate that he may return next year.
A few weeks ago, a report emerged that cast doubt on that.
So where do things presently stand?
According to Celtics insider Bobby Manning, Griffin returning to Boston remains on the table.
“I’ve heard the door remains open for his return despite the distance from family and his home on the west coast,” he wrote.
“Given that he mulled his options until October last year, it’s worth assuming he’ll follow a similarly deliberative process this summer.”
Griffin is obviously no longer the superstar he once was. Much of his game always relied on athleticism, and once that left him, he simply couldn’t adjust in a way that allowed him to continue being a meaningful on-the-court contributor.
That said, in limited minutes – he could still be helpful in the right situation.
Whether the Celtics are that right situation is debatable, though.

Should he and Boston opt to go their separate ways, those same squads could still make sense for him.
Where will Griffin ultimately be playing come the beginning of the 2023-24 NBA season? One way or the other, an answer will emerge soon enough.
