The Yankees know exactly what they need at the trade deadline. A shutdown closer.
And they have their eye on the best one available.
Multiple MLB outlets reported this week that the New York Yankees love the idea of acquiring San Diego Padres All-Star closer Mason Miller. With the August 3 trade deadline just two weeks away, and with the Padres sitting at 49-50 and fading fast in the NL West race, the fit is becoming increasingly obvious.
Miller is one of the most valuable relief pitchers in baseball. He turned 27 last month. He throws 102 miles per hour. He has a slider that hitters cannot touch. He was an All-Star this July. And he is under team control through 2029, which is the piece that really matters.
Every contender needs bullpen help. The Yankees need it more than most. Clay Holmes has been solid but not dominant. Luke Weaver has been solid but not overpowering. Ian Hamilton has been the most reliable arm all summer, but Aaron Boone is trying to piece together a bullpen that can hold leads in October, and right now, that group needs a true closer with dominant stuff.
Miller checks every box.
The problem is the price. San Diego knows what they have. A.J. Preller is not going to move Miller for anything less than a legitimate top-100 prospect package. The Yankees have the pieces to do it. Spencer Jones, one of the top hitting prospects in the minors, would headline any offer. Chase Hampton or Everson Pereira would need to be part of the return. And Preller has never been shy about demanding an extra late-round arm as a sweetener.
Would Yankees GM Brian Cashman actually pull the trigger on that kind of package for a reliever? Cashman has historically been reluctant to trade top prospects for bullpen help. But this Yankees team is right there. They have the best record in the AL. They have a real chance to win their first title since 2009. And Miller under team control through 2029 is not just a rental. He is a franchise asset.
The competition is going to be fierce. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Baltimore Orioles have all been connected to Miller in some form or another. The Dodgers, in particular, will make a push if their bullpen keeps looking as shaky as it has all July.
San Diego, meanwhile, has some decisions to make. If they truly believe they can turn it around and make a wild card push, they will hold. If they are honest with themselves about where the roster is, they will listen. Selling now while Miller’s value is at peak might be the smartest move Preller makes all year.
The Yankees are going to make this offer. Whether it gets done is now on San Diego. If Cashman gets Miller before the deadline, the Yankees become the clear World Series favorite in the American League. If he does not, expect the Bronx crowd to remember it every time a reliever blows a lead in September.
