Tarik Skubal Trade Rumors: Four Teams Have the Money and Prospects to Make It Happen

The Tarik Skubal trade rumors are already at full volume, and the 2026 MLB trade deadline is still nearly two months away. Tigers ace Skubal is on the injured list following elbow surgery, but that has not stopped the league’s contenders from positioning themselves as potential trade partners.

According to rival executives, four teams stand out as having both the financial flexibility and the prospect depth to make a Skubal trade happen: the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, and San Diego Padres. Those are the teams Detroit would have to negotiate with seriously if they decide to move their ace.

The complication is the elbow. Skubal had surgery earlier this season, and the Tigers have been measured about his recovery timeline. Any team trading for him would need to be comfortable with the idea that they might not get a single start out of him in 2026. The asking price would have to reflect that risk.

The reason the rumors persist anyway is that Skubal is one of the best pitchers in baseball when healthy. He won the AL Cy Young last season after going 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA over 192 innings. He has the swing-and-miss stuff, the command, and the durability profile that any contender would build a rotation around.

Detroit’s position is complicated too. The Tigers were one of the most surprising teams in baseball last year, and they have continued to compete this season. Trading Skubal would signal a different direction for the franchise, and the front office has been careful about doing anything that suggests a step back.

At the same time, Skubal is one year away from free agency. The Tigers either need to commit to a massive extension or get something back in trade. The history of arbitration-eligible aces who hit the market suggests that Skubal is going to command a contract that Detroit cannot match without restructuring its entire payroll philosophy.

The Dodgers are always the favorites in any major trade. Los Angeles has the prospects, the money, and the willingness to give up future assets to chase a title. They have been linked to nearly every available star in recent years, and Skubal would fit a clear need in their rotation.

The Yankees are right there with them. New York has been searching for a true ace to pair with Gerrit Cole, and Skubal would solve that problem in a single move. The downside is that the Yankees prospect pool has been somewhat depleted by previous trades, and they would have to get creative to put together a package the Tigers would accept.

The Blue Jays are an interesting case. Toronto has been making aggressive moves to build around their existing core, and they have the prospect capital to compete in a major trade. The challenge is that Toronto’s window is increasingly narrow, and trading future assets for an injured ace is a high-risk move.

The Padres round out the group. San Diego has historically been willing to push all-in on title pursuits, and they have the kind of front office that does not blink at the prospect cost of a major trade. They have been quieter so far this season, but they could surge into the conversation closer to the deadline.

For Tigers fans, the entire situation is emotionally complicated. Skubal has become the face of the franchise. The team has built its identity around his starts. Letting him go would be the kind of move that changes the relationship between the franchise and the fan base. The front office knows that, which is why they have been so cautious about engaging publicly with the rumors.

The trade deadline is August 3 this year. That gives the Tigers nearly two months to evaluate the team’s position, Skubal’s recovery progress, and the offers that come in from the contenders. Anything could happen between now and then.

The smart money still says Skubal stays in Detroit through the deadline. The Tigers will hold on and try to extend him in the offseason. But every time the rumors get repeated, the pressure builds. Detroit has to be ready for the call that changes everything.
