Sandy Alcantara Trade Rumors Are Heating Up. The Marlins Just Need a Match

Sandy Alcantara is going to get traded. That is the consensus among MLB executives and writers covering the trade deadline. The Marlins ace, who has been on the block for what feels like two straight seasons, is finally about to find a new home. The list of potential landing spots is long. The most prominent names are the Yankees, the Cubs, and the Braves.
Teams are far more bullish on Alcantara this deadline than they were last summer. There are reasons for that. He is healthy. He is pitching well. He has a club option for 2027 that is below the qualifying offer level, which gives any acquiring team essentially a year and a half of an ace at below market rates. The Marlins are not contending and have no incentive to hold him.
The Yankees fit makes too much sense. Their rotation has been good but they need another front line arm for a deep playoff run. Gerrit Cole is the ace but he cannot do it alone in October. Adding Alcantara behind Cole gives them a one two punch that nobody in the American League can match. The farm system has the pieces to make the deal.
The Cubs are the more interesting candidate. Chicago has been pushing for the NL Central crown. They have the prospects. They have the financial flexibility. Adding Alcantara to a rotation with Justin Steele, Shota Imanaga, and Jameson Taillon would make them the favorite to win the division. Jed Hoyer has been quietly aggressive this summer.
The Braves are the dark horse. Atlanta has dealt with injuries all year. They need pitching. They have always been willing to spend on arms. They have done business with the Marlins in the past. But the Braves have been more careful about their farm system lately, which could limit how much they can offer.
Other teams in the mix include the Padres, the Brewers, the Rays, the Guardians, the Diamondbacks, the A’s, the White Sox, and the Mets. Most of those teams are long shots. The Padres have salary issues. The Brewers do not typically deal for top of market arms. The White Sox are not contending. The Mets already added Frankie Montas and might not want to pay the price for a rental.
For the Marlins, this is the year to cash in. Alcantara’s value will never be higher than it is right now. He is throwing hard. He is eating innings. He is inducing ground balls. He is healthy. Miami’s front office has been aggressive in selling. Peter Bendix has stripped the team down to the studs in his time as president of baseball operations. Alcantara is the last big asset to move.
The return is going to be massive. Teams with serious interest are looking at packages built around top 100 prospects, MLB ready position players, and additional lottery tickets. The Marlins should be able to add three or four legitimate building blocks for one of the best pitchers in baseball. That is how you accelerate a rebuild.
The other angle here is the Marlins’ market situation. Miami has been bottom of the league in attendance for years. Trading Alcantara is going to make that worse in the short term. The team is selling a Cy Young Award winner and an ace pitcher for prospects who will not arrive in the big leagues for two more years. Fans understand it. They do not have to like it.
The trade is probably happening within the next four weeks. The deadline is August 3. The Marlins will move Alcantara before then. Some contender is about to get a difference maker. The race for him is going to be one of the defining stories of the deadline.
