The New York Yankees have a bullpen problem, and they think they know the guy who can solve it.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported this week that the Yankees “love” the idea of trading for San Diego Padres closer Mason Miller. Heyman added that New York would likely keep top infield prospect George Lombard Jr. off the table in any trade talks.
That kind of aggressive posturing from the Yankees means one thing. They are treating Miller as their top deadline target.
Miller Is the Best Reliever in Baseball
This is not close. The 27-year-old righty is throwing triple digits with movement that no hitter has figured out.
Miller made his second All-Star team in 2026. He is sporting a 0.91 ERA, a 0.78 WHIP, and an MLB-best 25 saves in 25 tries. His strikeout rate is a comical 16.3 per nine innings. Nobody in baseball is dominating late innings like Miller is right now.
He is also under contract through 2029, which means he is not a rental. Any team that trades for him gets three more years of team control after this season ends.
Why the Padres Might Actually Move Him
San Diego is 48-48. The Padres are 3.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot. They have no realistic path to the division. Their season is quietly slipping away.
President A.J. Preller has publicly downplayed the idea of moving Miller, but Preller says a lot of things in July. If San Diego drops another series or two before August 3, the phone lines are going to open up.
Miller is the single most valuable asset on the Padres roster. Trading him would net a haul that could restock the entire farm system and give San Diego real flexibility for 2027.
The Yankees Have the Chips
New York currently sits at 54-42 with the top American League Wild Card spot. Their current closer situation involves David Bednar, who has a 2.70 ERA and 18 saves. That is fine. Miller is not fine. Miller is elite.
Brian Cashman knows what he needs. He has been vocal about wanting elite bullpen arms since spring, and he has a farm system loaded with prospects who could headline a deal even without Lombard Jr.
The Yankees also have the payroll flexibility to absorb Miller’s remaining years. That combination of prospects and dollars is exactly what San Diego would want.
Who Else Is Involved
The Yankees are not alone. The Phillies desperately need a closer after Brad Keller went down with a UCL tear this week. The Dodgers can always outbid anyone. Even the Cubs and Braves have been sniffing around the top-tier bullpen market.
If San Diego decides to sell, this could turn into a bidding war fast. Miller would draw the biggest package of any pitcher moved this July, and it is not particularly close.
What the Yankees Are Willing to Give Up
Keeping Lombard Jr. off the table shows New York’s ceiling. That means the Padres would need to build around lower-tier prospects, and San Diego might just push for Lombard anyway.
The negotiation dance is only starting. Preller wants Lombard. Cashman does not want to give him up. Somewhere in the middle is a deal that gets done, or does not.
The Verdict
If the Padres decide to sell, Miller ends up in a Yankee uniform. Nobody has more urgency, more chips, or more reason to make the deal happen.
It is only a question of whether San Diego blinks first.
