According to Heyman, the Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners, and New York Yankees are the top three suitors for the San Diego Padres closer with the August 3 deadline closing in fast. That is a serious list of teams and a serious signal that the Padres are actually going to listen, even if general manager A.J. Preller keeps insisting he isn’t shopping his best reliever.

That is a massive commitment, and it tells you exactly how badly New York wants this.

The Padres are still very much in the playoff race, and moving your All-Star closer while you’re chasing a wild card is a hard sell in the clubhouse.
