Dodgers Are Prepping a Blockbuster: Which Trade Deadline Target Is Actually in Play?
The Dodgers do not miss at the trade deadline. Andrew Friedman is preparing another blockbuster. The only question is which one.
Los Angeles enters the final week before the August 3 deadline as legitimate World Series contenders. The lineup is loaded. The rotation is elite when healthy. The bullpen has been fine. But injuries have exposed real weaknesses, and Friedman is going shopping.
Three names dominate the conversation. Tarik Skubal is the dream. Aroldis Chapman is realistic. Jonah Heim is under the radar but makes total sense.
The Skubal Fantasy
Tarik Skubal is the No. 1 name on the trade board. Every serious pitching-needy team has called Detroit. The Dodgers have been in constant contact.
Rival evaluators think Los Angeles matches up better than anyone else because the Dodgers can offer outfielders, pitchers, and prospects at every level. Detroit reportedly wants a headline prospect plus major-league-ready talent plus additional pieces.
The Dodgers have all of it. Andy Pages, Josue De Paula, Diego Cartaya, Bobby Miller. Trade any two of those plus a fifth-tier prospect and Los Angeles could probably steal Skubal. The catch is that Detroit does not want to sell.
Unless the Tigers reverse course, this is fantasy. The Dodgers know it. They are keeping the offer warm just in case.
Aroldis Chapman Is the Realistic Move
The Los Angeles bullpen has been a problem all season. Blake Treinen has been fine. Alex Vesia has been good. But the closer role has bounced around, and October baseball requires a shutdown ninth inning.
Aroldis Chapman is 38 but still pitching great. He has a 2.30 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 33 innings. He would immediately become the Dodgers’ closer.
The price is minimal. A mid-tier prospect. Chapman is a two-month rental. The Dodgers can absorb the salary and the risk. This one gets done in the next 10 days.
Jonah Heim Is the Sneaky Move
Will Smith is dealing with a nagging hand issue. Dalton Rushing is a rookie backup. The Dodgers need catcher depth for October, and Jonah Heim in Texas is the ideal fit.
Heim is a switch-hitter with strong defensive metrics. He is under contract through 2027 at reasonable dollars. Texas is not out of contention but is not making a run either. If Chris Young is willing to sell, Heim is the perfect chip.
The Dodgers would give up a real prospect but not a top-tier one. This move keeps their offense stable while Will Smith heals up.
What Actually Happens
Los Angeles makes two moves. Chapman for the bullpen. Heim for the catcher depth. Skubal probably stays in Detroit unless the Tigers change course.
If Skubal does come available in the final 24 hours, everything else changes. Friedman would blow up any secondary framework to land him. That is the kind of pitcher you build an October rotation around.
For now, expect two solid moves that fill obvious needs. That is how the Dodgers operate. Small tweaks. Sustained excellence. Another 100-win season. Another October run.
