ESPN Announcer Carolyn Peck’s Comment About LSU Players Goes Viral

ESPN announcer Carolyn Peck found herself trending this week when fans at home were taken aback by a comment she made about LSU’s women’s basketball team.

Obviously the Tigers are no strangers to making headlines. Between fans noticing something odd on Hailey Van Lith’s lip, Angel Reese’s wild party photos with Olivia Dunne leaking out and Kim Mulkey openly insulting Caitlin Clark, it has been one thing after another for them over the past year.

Because of that, all this hoopla surrounding the team isn’t shocking.

That said, the fact that Peck’s comment went so viral is definitely telling of LSU’s place within the larger cultural zeitgeist.

The comment in question largely speaks for itself:

“As a coach,” Peck said, “I say ‘bench, stay in this ball game, stay excited, stay enthusiastic, pull your team through! I don’t care if the officials are telling you to sit down.’”

The problem is, fans at home didn’t hear “bench.” They heard another word:

LSU beat Vanderbilt 85-62 in that particular outing.

Peck has yet to come out and address her viral commentary.

ESPN, likewise, has not issued a statement on what transpired.

It will be interesting to see if either Peck or ESPN ultimately decide to comment on the matter given how it has set the internet ablaze in recent days.
