Tom Brady led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a dominant 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. In the process, he won his seventh career Super Bowl trophy and fifth Super Bowl MVP trophy.

Unfortunately, the game did not come and go without controversy.

Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu and Brady had several clashes throughout the outing, including one particularly memorable one that saw the former stick his finger in the latter’s face.

The oddly emotional display from Mathieu prompted many to ask: what had him so angry?

Afterward, Mathieu seemingly answered that question with this tweet:

The implication there is clear: he seems to be alluding to Brady using some sort of slur towards him. Interestingly enough, Mathieu immediately deleted that tweet – but not before people could offer their takes on the situation.

So did Brady use a slur on Mathieu? Well, the answer is easily verifiable, as the Bucs quarterback was mic’d up for this game. Here is what he said:

Brady’s comments seem to be pretty standard fare for a football game, and certainly nowhere near the magnitude of what Mathieu was implicating him in.

Oddly enough, Mathieu continued to push the line after the game that Brady had done something wrong.

“Listen, Tom Brady’s a great quarterback,” Mathieu said.

“I never really saw that side of Tom Brady, to be honest. But whatever. No comment. It’s over with. I’m done with it.”

Based on what appear to be the facts, at some point Mathieu will need to come out and clear up precisely what went down. Because suggesting that someone used a slur against you when it’s demonstrable that they didn’t is a pretty serious thing, and it shouldn’t simply pass without some sort of legitimate resolution.

This has already been a really rough week for the Chiefs, what with Andy Reid’s son and team assistant Britt Reid leaving a 5-year-old with life-threatening injuries after driving impaired, and Patrick Mahomes’ lame brother grating the nerves of the entire nation, and this bizarre behavior from Mathieu isn’t helping matters any.
