Warde Manuel Is Out at Michigan After Internal Investigation Cites ‘Accountability’ Failures
Warde Manuel is stepping down as Michigan’s athletic director. The school made it official Monday after releasing the summary of an internal investigation into the athletic program.
The report did not find evidence of “widespread” misconduct. It did find failures in “accountability, organizational structure, oversight, and reporting.” Those failures, per the school’s own language, created conditions where misconduct “was not always addressed consistently, promptly, or in accordance with University expectations.”
That is a resignation notice dressed up in HR language.
Manuel said he’ll step down at the end of the calendar year. He plans to implement the recommended improvements until then. That’s a graceful exit written to protect his legacy. The scoreboard tells a different story.
The Scandals That Piled Up
Manuel took over as Michigan’s AD in 2016. He played football for Bo Schembechler in the late 1980s. He’s a Michigan man. That did not save the department from the last three years.
Jim Harbaugh got hit with alleged recruiting violations. Then came the sign-stealing scandal that swallowed the football program whole. Then Sherrone Moore got dismissed for an inappropriate relationship with an assistant staff member. Three body blows in a row, each one worse than the last for the AD’s office.
You can only survive so many crises before the crisis is you. Manuel had run out of runway.
What This Means for Michigan
Michigan is hunting for a new athletic director in one of the messiest markets college sports has ever seen. Revenue-share is now real. NIL is unregulated chaos. The transfer portal never closes. Whoever takes this job inherits a football program that just went national-title level, dealt with a coach getting fired for cause, and lost its athletic director in the same 18-month window.
That’s not a plum job. That’s a rebuild.
The next AD has to keep Sherrone Moore’s replacement grounded, rebuild trust with donors and boosters, and stay ahead of a Big Ten arms race that includes Ohio State, Penn State, and USC spending like they mean it.
Manuel’s tenure will be remembered for the 2023 national title in football, a program-defining moment. It will also be remembered for the scandal wave that followed. Both things are true.
Michigan promised transparency in the investigation report. Now it needs to prove that with the hire. Because the next athletic director has to do what Manuel could not, which is stop the bleeding.
