An unexpected Mississippi State coaching candidate emerged this week.
Following Joe Moorhead’s somewhat surprising firing last week, rumors have been running rampant regarding who would replace him.
Joe Judge was thought to the favorite for the position, but he ultimately accepted a heading coaching job with the New York Giants instead.
Now a new name has emerged: Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian.
There is some real interest on both sides between Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian and Mississippi State. It’s something to keep an eye on.

According to Aaron Suttles of The Athletic, there is “real interest” in getting something done between both parties.
Sarkisian has been Alabama’s offensive coordinator this past season after being the Atlanta Falcons’ offensive coordinator from 2017 to 2018.
Sarkisian previously served as head coach in 2014 when he took over at USC. Prior to that, he also coached at Washington from 2009 to 2013.
Mississippi State parted ways with Moorhead in abrupt fashion despite his end-of-season win over Ole Miss. Some thought that victory may end up saving his job, but it didn’t.
Under Moorhead, Mississippi State dealt with an onslaught of disciplinary issues.
The incident that sticks out in everyone’s mind is quarterback Garrett Shrader being left with a broken orbital bone following a fight with teammate Willie Gay. As a result of the injury, Shrader had to miss the team’s bowl game.
Is Sarkisian the right man to fix Mississippi State’s culture? Time will tell.
