South Carolina will be starting the 2026 season without its best offensive lineman. Head coach Shane Beamer announced this week that left tackle Josiah Thompson will “most likely” miss the entire season with a lower-body injury that will require surgery.
That is a punch to the gut for a Gamecocks program that has spent the last two years quietly building a real SEC contender around quarterback LaNorris Sellers.
Thompson started 24 of 25 games at left tackle over the last two seasons. He was the guy protecting Sellers’ blind side, the guy setting the edge on run designs to the strong side, and the guy the Gamecocks were counting on to help this offense take the next step in year three of Beamer’s rebuild. Now he is going to be out of pads until 2027 at the earliest.
Beamer’s phrasing was interesting. He said the injury “goes back to a couple of years ago” and that surgery was “the most likely end result for him.” That reads like Thompson has been battling this for a while and the medical staff finally decided the smart move was to shut him down.
“He played through it last season, but in order for him to be at his best as a football player beyond college, it’s one of those things that needed to happen at some point,” Beamer said.
Beamer did not name the specific injury and said it was not “long-term.” That last part is important. Whatever this is, Thompson is expected to make a full return and continue his football career. That matters for a player who has NFL potential at his position.
The immediate replacement question is the harder one. South Carolina has some depth on the interior of the line, but true left tackle prospects are hard to find on any roster. Expect the Gamecocks to move a swing tackle into the lineup and shift some pieces around. There will be growing pains.
The larger schedule picture makes this hurt more. South Carolina opens the season with a manageable non-conference stretch, but the SEC schedule is brutal. Games against LSU, Georgia, Ole Miss, and rival Clemson all feature elite pass rushers who feast on inexperienced tackles.
Sellers is going to have to be extra careful. He is a special dual-threat talent, but even the most mobile quarterbacks get worn down when the blind side is a rotating cast. Expect more designed rollouts, more max protection on obvious passing downs, and probably a shorter list of full-field concepts in the early weeks while the offensive line settles.
The good news is that the rest of the offense returns most of its production, and the defense should again be one of the best in the SEC. South Carolina is still a good team. But losing your best lineman before September starts is the kind of thing that turns a nine-win season into a seven-win season, and that is the honest range now.
