Pac-12 coaches are now publicly mocking USC and Clay Helton.
For decades the Trojans were viewed as college football royalty. Championship runs, star power and the glitz of Los Angeles helped catapult USC to rarefied air.
Unfortunately, the last decade has not been kind to the program.
Driving this point home was this past week’s embarrassing showing as it pertained to early recruiting commitments.
As of this point, USC’s 2020 recruiting class is one of the worst in program history. Currently the Trojans are ranked 79th in the nation, behind programs like Bowling Green and Western Michigan.
According to Fox Sports college football insider Bruce Feldman, this has not gone unnoticed in the Pac-12. Apparently other coaches are openly ridiculing USC now.
“Talking to coaches in the Pac-12, seeing a lot of the recruits they’ve signed – at least in the early signing period – people feel like these are Mountain West caliber players,” Feldman said.

“It’s one thing if you sign this kind of class at Washington State or Oregon State. But USC? There’s a lot of big time kids – this was a good crop of players, by and large, in the state of California, especially in Southern California.
“And they went other places. A lot of them went to Oregon. The best ones went to Oregon. They went outside the conference.”
A lot of people thought USC would part ways with Helton this summer and move on to someone with more recruiting prowess like Urban Meyer.
Unfortunately, the decision to hire Mike Bohn as the school’s new athletic director killed those dreams.
Bohn did not have a meaningful relationship with Meyer, and as such it quickly became apparent that he was no longer in contention to be the next Trojans coach.
A lot about USC’s future will be determined by the 2020 season.
Following a weak start, the Trojans rallied and finished the year off decently strong. If they can build on that momentum, maybe Helton will be able to reclaim some dignity and secure some recruits.
If the 2020 season starts off slowly, though, that coupled with the poor recruiting will likely spell the end of Helton’s time in Southern California.
