Oklahoma has a big weakness heading into 2020, says ESPN.
The Sooners are fresh off a campaign that saw them make it to the College Football Playoff as a number four seed.
Unfortunately, once there, Oklahoma got trounced in embarrassing fashion by eventual champion LSU.
With quarterback Jalen Hurts departing, many are wondering what the future will hold for the Sooners next season.
According to ESPN college football insider Sam Khan Jr., it is worth keeping an eye on what Lincoln Riley’s squad does on the defensive side of the ball.
“How well will the Sooners fill the key veteran losses on defense?” he wrote.
“Oklahoma’s two best defensive players from 2019 — defensive tackle Neville Gallimore and linebacker Kenneth Murray — are moving on to the pros after playing huge roles in the Sooners’ defensive turnaround.”
It is no secret that Oklahoma has struggled defensively in recent years.
While Riley gets a lot of credit for his offenses, and understandably so, the defense leaves a lot to be desired.
Obviously the Sooners can continue to dominate the Big 12 either way.
Baylor will take a step back next season and Texas is Texas.
But if Riley and Co. want to compete for a National Championship and not get humiliated the way they did by the Tigers this past season, they will need to figure out what’s what on the other side of the ball.
