Is Mississippi State hiring a Patriots coordinator as its new coach?
On the heels of Joe Moorhead’s bizarre dismissal this week, it is beginning to look that way.
Moorhead looked to have earned a reprieve heading into the offseason following a victory over Ole Miss.
Unfortunately, a disappointing performance against Louisville in the Music City Bowl left a bad taste in the mouths of school brass and led to Moorhead’s eventual demise.
Moorhead being fired after just two years at the helm has led many to wonder specifically what sort of coaching candidate would succeed at Mississippi State.
Obviously someone who can maintain order and disciple will be key.
Under Moorhead, Mississippi State frequently found itself in the headlines for the wrong reasons. Namely, an incident where quarterback Garrett Shrader was left with a broken orbital bone following a brawl with teammate Willie Gay.
Shrader was forced to miss the team’s bowl game as a result of the injury.
Another major issue will be cultural fit. A lot of people felt like Moorhead just was never fully comfortable in his deep south setting.
With Joe Moorhead being fired, expect Miss. State, an interesting name to watch is #Patriots STC Joe Judge. He played and coached there, and a source says has always wanted the job. He will have some key backers there.

So who will replace him? According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, New England assistant coach Joe Judge might be the guy.
Feldman reports that Judge has “always wanted the job,” and that he possesses the sort of pedigree that makes him appealing to Mississippi State’s administration.
Judge has won three championships with the Patriots since 2012. Prior to that, he served for three years under Nick Saban.
Between his experience and being a Mississippi State alum, the 37-year-old checks a lot of boxes.
Will he ultimately get the nod, though? We should find out at some point in the next few weeks.
