Ed Orgeron Took a Shot at Brian Kelly During His Return to LSU

Ed Orgeron is back at LSU and he is already throwing punches.
The former national championship-winning head coach has officially joined Lane Kiffin’s staff in Baton Rouge, and during one of his first public appearances since the hiring, Orgeron took an unmistakable shot at his predecessor Brian Kelly. Coach O did not say Kelly’s name. He did not have to. Everyone in Tiger Stadium knew exactly who he was talking about.
The bad blood between Kelly’s tenure and the LSU fan base is the worst-kept secret in college football. Orgeron just poked the wound.
What He Said
Orgeron leaned into his identity as the local guy who gets the program. He talked about authenticity. He talked about understanding what LSU football means to the state. He talked about not pretending to be something you are not. That last line landed especially hard given the history.
Kelly famously made his first impression at LSU by using a phony Southern accent during a speech at a basketball game. The clip went viral immediately and never really went away. Kelly never quite recovered from the perception that he was a Northeast guy faking the bayou. Orgeron knew that. He used it.
The Brian Kelly Story Is a Mess
Kelly was fired after his last season in Baton Rouge ended with LSU fans openly chanting for his removal during the Texas A&M loss. He filed a lawsuit against LSU accusing the school of sabotaging him. The whole thing got ugly. The school and Kelly are still working through it legally.
Bringing Orgeron back is a clear message from the LSU administration. They want a return to the culture that won them a national title in 2019. Kiffin is the head coach. Orgeron is the connective tissue to the past. He is reportedly taking only a modest salary because he wants to be there.
Can LSU Actually Win With This Setup
The Tigers are loaded with talent. They have one of the best recruiting classes in the country coming in. Kiffin’s offense is one of the most explosive in college football. Adding Orgeron’s defensive line knowledge and recruiting connections is going to make this team even more dangerous.
The SEC is brutal. Alabama is still Alabama. Georgia is still Georgia. Texas is the new monster in the conference. LSU has to compete with all of them.
If Kiffin and Orgeron can get the locker room buying in, this team has a real chance to make noise in 2026. The shot at Kelly was a way of telling LSU fans that the old culture is back. Now they have to win games to prove it.
The hot seat just transferred to Baton Rouge.
