Cooper Witten Commits to Oklahoma. The Sooners Just Landed a Recruiting Star.

Oklahoma just landed one of the bigger names of the 2027 recruiting cycle. Cooper Witten, the son of former NFL All-Pro tight end Jason Witten and a four-star outside linebacker recruit, announced his commitment to the Sooners this week.

The Witten name carries weight in football circles, and Cooper has been backing up the bloodline with real production on the field. He’s a long, athletic edge rusher with good closing speed and the kind of frame that adds weight as he matures. Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator made him a priority target months ago.

This is a big win for Brent Venables, who has been quietly rebuilding the Sooners’ defensive recruiting since taking over the program. Oklahoma’s defense has been a work in progress, and bringing in elite athletic talent at the linebacker spot is exactly what Venables specializes in developing.

Jason Witten was one of the most respected players of his NFL generation. He spent his entire career with the Cowboys, was a four-time All-Pro, and is going to be in the Hall of Fame conversation when his time comes. The fact that he’s actively raising another football player who is following his path is one of the cooler stories in current college recruiting.

Cooper picked Oklahoma over a long list of suitors. The schools that pursued him hardest included Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, and Tennessee. The Sooners winning this battle is a statement about Oklahoma’s recruiting infrastructure now that they’re in the SEC.

The fit at Oklahoma makes sense from a developmental standpoint. Venables runs a defensive scheme that uses his edge rushers in versatile ways. Cooper has the body type and athletic profile to play multiple alignments, which is exactly what Venables looks for. He’s going to be developed as a defensive playmaker, not pigeon-holed into one role.

The early commitment is also strategic for Oklahoma. The Sooners have struggled at times in the final weeks of recruiting cycles, losing late commits to other SEC programs. Locking down a player like Cooper this early in the 2027 process gives the staff something concrete to sell to other targets.

NIL is going to be a piece of this story too. Cooper’s name carries marketability beyond his on-field production, and Oklahoma’s NIL collective is among the more developed in the country. He’s going to be one of the higher-profile NIL athletes in his class from the moment he steps on campus.

The Witten family has been involved in college football beyond Jason’s NFL career too. Jason has been outspoken about youth football safety, and Cooper has grown up around the game in ways that most recruits simply can’t replicate. The football IQ piece of his evaluation is unique because of that background.

Oklahoma’s 2027 class is now building real momentum. The Sooners had been quiet for several weeks while other SEC programs were piling up commitments, and the Witten pickup gets them back on the recruiting map in a meaningful way.

The next 12 months are going to be busy. Cooper will be visited by every coaching staff in the country trying to flip him, and Oklahoma’s coaches will need to keep him engaged. He’s said publicly he’s committed and not looking around, but recruiting being what it is, the staff isn’t going to take anything for granted.

Boomer Sooner just got a future star. The bloodline says he’ll deliver.
