Bill Belichick Kicks Field Goal on 4th and Goal from the 2 in UNC Season Opener
Bill Belichick, the coach who built his NFL legacy on being smarter and more aggressive than everybody else, kicked a field goal on 4th and goal from the 2-yard line on the opening drive of his second season at North Carolina. That is a real sentence about a real thing that really happened in Dublin, Ireland on Friday.
UNC opened its season at Aviva Stadium against TCU in the Aer Lingus Classic on Aug. 29, 2026. First drive of the year, first drive of Belichick’s second season, first opportunity to set a tone. He set one. Just not the one anyone expected.
The Internet Reacted Accordingly
NFL analyst Warren Sharp captured the mood in a single tweet. “Bill Belichick kicking a FG on 4th & goal from the 2-yard line …on the first drive of the season, we are so back.”
He was joking. Sort of. The joke lands because it is completely at odds with the guy Belichick has been for 30 years. This is the coach who trusted his fourth down math when nobody else in the NFL would. The coach who went for it on 4th and 2 against the Colts in 2009. The coach whose analytics-forward reputation was cemented before analytics were even a word people used comfortably at football press conferences.
Actually, UNC Won
Here is the part that saves it. UNC beat TCU 15-10. Belichick got his Year 2 opening win, on the road, on a different continent, against a Power 4 opponent that most people had penciled in as the favorite. The field goal from the 2 became a talking point but not a defining moment.
Field goals count. A 15-10 win still gets you back to Chapel Hill with a 1-0 record. Belichick will take that. So will Carolina fans, who have spent the last year listening to national media alternately mock and marvel at the idea of the greatest NFL coach ever running a college program.
But Also, What Are We Doing
Fourth and goal from the 2. Season opener. Everyone is fresh. Everyone is nervous. You are the team that just brought in Bill Belichick to change the culture. And your response is a field goal team.
The math almost never says kick there. The expected points on 4th and goal from the 2 versus a field goal are not close. Belichick knows this better than anyone alive. He built teams around exploiting exactly this kind of inefficiency in opposing coaches.
Maybe he was managing his young quarterback. Maybe he wanted to see the defense. Maybe he was easing his roster into the game speed of a real opponent. Coaches can construct rationales for anything. And in college the calculus is a little different, because you cannot always trust your line to get one yard on demand.
Something to Watch
The bigger question is whether this becomes a pattern. Belichick in Year 1 at UNC was still figuring out the college game. If Year 2 Belichick has decided to be conservative until his roster proves itself, that will show up over the course of the season and reasonable people will disagree about it.
For one Friday night in Dublin, though, the reaction was mostly disbelief. Bill Belichick kicked the field goal. Somewhere Roger Goodell is smiling.
