Boston Red Sox Make Final Decision About Mookie Betts

The Boston Red Sox made a final decision about Mookie Betts.

Betts has been frequently mentioned as a piece that Boston might choose to move this offseason.

It makes sense from a financial standpoint, as the Red Sox are desperately looking to cut their total payroll after a disastrous post-championship campaign last year.

Despite all the chatter, though, the former AL MVP is likely not going anywhere.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, there is a lot of doubt among rival teams that Betts is actually on the market.

Teams are “highly skeptical” than the Red Sox will pull the trigger this year, apparently.

“Rival clubs remain highly skeptical the #RedSox will trade Mookie Betts this winter, saying Boston’s return would be too low. Teams interested in him can simply wait until he’s a free agent next winter, saving the $27-$30 million in 2020 without giving up any prospects in a deal,” he Nightengale tweeted out.

With Boston’s leverage decreasing on a daily basis, it is easy to see why rival teams would hold off on offering anything big. What is not clear, however, is why the Red Sox would not be more aggressively shopping Betts at this point.

At this point Betts’ departure seems inevitable, but it will likely happen right around the trade deadline. For now, the Red Sox seem content staying pat.
