Marina Mabrey found herself on the wrong end of an Indiana Fever star again, and this time it was not Caitlin Clark doing the confronting.
Kelsey Mitchell shoved Mabrey and stuck a finger in her face during the third quarter of Indiana’s 101-95 win over the Toronto Tempo on Tuesday at Coca-Cola Coliseum. The two guards drew double technicals for the incident.
Mabrey bumped Mitchell as she tried to get open on a Fever possession. Mitchell was clearly fed up with the contact, and the shove that followed was the kind of message Mitchell has not made a habit of sending during her All-Star career.
She let her game do the rest of the talking. Mitchell dropped a game-high 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting to bury Toronto, while Mabrey finished with a team-high 22 on 7-of-21 for the Tempo.
Mabrey Keeps Finding Trouble With Indiana
This is not the first time Mabrey has ended up in a scrum with a Fever star. Last season, while still with the Connecticut Sun, Mabrey shoved Caitlin Clark to the floor during a game and picked up a technical for it. That incident became a lightning rod for the entire Clark-versus-the-league debate that dominated the 2025 WNBA season.
Now Mitchell has her own moment, and the pattern is starting to look like a pattern. Two Fever All-Stars, two on-court confrontations with the same player.
Mabrey has always played on the chippy side, and that competitive edge is a big reason she is a 20-point-per-game scorer in this league. But there is a difference between playing hard and constantly finding yourself in shoving matches with opposing stars.
What This Means for the Fever
Indiana needed the win, and Mitchell gave it to them. The Fever are firmly in the playoff picture, and Mitchell has been the steadying force all season while Clark has dealt with injuries and increased defensive attention.
The shove is going to travel further than the box score, though. Fever fans are already treating Mitchell like she was standing up for Clark by proxy, and there is no shortage of noise online about the whole thing.
Mitchell may have just given Indiana its edge for the stretch run. When your leading scorer decides she is done being pushed around, the whole locker room hears it.
The Bigger Picture
The WNBA is more physical than casual fans give it credit for, and moments like this do not hurt the product. They amplify it. The Fever-Tempo matchup was already a decent watch, and now it has a rivalry starter to build on.
Mabrey is not going to change how she plays. Mitchell may not either. The next Fever-Tempo meeting is already circled, and Mabrey should probably expect a similar reception the next time she leans on a Fever guard.
For a Fever team trying to build a real identity around Clark and Mitchell, having a moment like this on tape is not the worst outcome. Toughness travels. So does message-sending. Indiana just got both in the same night.
