Caitlin Clark Becomes Fastest Point Guard to 1,000 WNBA Points: The Fever Star Is Back and Already Making History

Caitlin Clark missed most of last season. She came back this month and immediately set a WNBA record.

The Indiana Fever guard became the fastest point guard in league history to reach 1,000 career points during opening weekend of the 2026 WNBA season. She did it in a 107-104 loss to the Dallas Wings, finishing with 20 points, seven assists, and five rebounds in her first WNBA game since July 2025.

It was her 35th career game. Nobody at her position had ever hit 1,000 faster.

The Comeback Is Real

Clark’s rookie year ended early because of a series of nagging injuries that eventually became chronic. She missed most of last summer rehabbing. The Fever struggled without her. Indiana fans spent months wondering if the player who reset the cultural conversation around the WNBA would ever be the same.

One game in and the answer looks like yes. Clark’s shot is back. Her passing vision is back. Her ability to play through contact in the paint looks improved. The Fever lost the game, but Clark looked like the player who lit up the country in her rookie debut.

That is the most important thing about her comeback. She is not playing scared. She is not pulling up early on drives. She is attacking the same way she did as a freshman at Iowa, except now her teammates are professional players who can finish what she creates.

Angel Reese Made History Too

The same weekend that Clark hit her milestone, Angel Reese became the fastest player in WNBA history to record 50 career double-doubles. Reese was making her regular-season debut with the Atlanta Dream after an offseason trade from Chicago. She helped lead Atlanta to a 91-90 win over the Minnesota Lynx.

The Clark vs. Reese era of the WNBA is officially back in full force. Their first head-to-head matchup of the season is June 4 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and the league has already turned it into a marketing centerpiece.

The Fever Are a Real Contender

Lost in the noise around Clark’s individual milestones is the bigger story for Indiana. The Fever spent the offseason adding real veteran talent around Clark. They are deeper at every position. They have an actual rim protector. They have shooters who can space the floor and let Clark drive the lane.

That all matters because the WNBA is more competitive than it has ever been. The Wings looked excellent in their opener. The Liberty are still the defending champs. The Aces are loaded. The Sky are reloading.

Indiana cannot just rely on Caitlin Clark to win games on volume. They need her to be efficient, healthy, and surrounded by a real supporting cast. The first weekend showed that all three boxes might finally be checked.

The WNBA needed Clark back. They have her. The league is about to have its biggest year yet.
