San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan is one of the best NBA players of all time.
In many people’s eyes, he is the greatest power forward ever.
Over the course of his career, Duncan earned nearly a quarter of a billion dollars, which with today’s inflation is roughly $360 million.
That said – he also learned some tough financial lessons along the way.
During a conversation with Bleacher Report, Duncan revealed how he managed to blow $20 million just by not having the proper safe guards in place.
“I thought, for the most part, I was keeping an eye on things,” he said.
“You have to have people checking on people checking on people. I did that for a while. Obviously, I got to a point where the people I trusted were checking on themselves. The bottom line is this: You can’t be angry at yourself. I keep going back to this word, but I trusted someone.
“I was wrong about it. I got screwed over for it. I’m not mad at myself for that. That’s a lesson learned. I’ll never put myself in that situation again.”
That said, Duncan admitted that he was still fine financially after the blow.
“Luckily I had a long career and made good money,” he added.
“This is a big chunk, but it’s not going to change my life in any way. It’s not going to make any decisions for me.”
Because of his quiet personality, fans have been fascinated by Duncan’s off-the-court behavior since his retirement. His sexuality has been a popular topic of conversation, and his interview with Rachel Nichols made headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Windows like this into his life and past are always welcomed, though.
Hopefully in the coming years, Duncan continues to open up more about the things he went through and experienced.

His place in hoops lore is etched in stone no matter what, obviously. But hearing from him adds context and clarity.
What fascinating tidbits will Duncan divulge next?
Time will tell.
