Harry Kane Loses Voice After England World Cup Win Over Mexico: ‘Wonderwall’ Was Worth It

Harry Kane put a penalty away in the 60th minute against Mexico on Sunday. Then he tried to give a post match interview and could barely get the words out.

England advanced to the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals with a 3-2 win over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. Kane, who scored the third goal, was pulled aside by the BBC for a chat about a scary moment involving his teammate Jordan Henderson, who had to be stretchered off during the postgame celebration. Kane opened his mouth and realized he was basically out of vocal cords.

“Jordan, just there,” Kane started before laughing at himself. “My voice is gone. Hendo, just there, fell over there. I think he’s okay. Something to do with his arm.”

The clip has already gone viral. Kane trying to give a serious update on his teammate while sounding like a character from a British sitcom is the type of moment that transcends soccer. It is now easily one of the more delightful interviews of this World Cup.

What happened to his voice? Simple. Kane and the rest of the England team joined the fans in singing Oasis’s “Wonderwall” during the postgame celebration, and the captain went all in. If you are going to lose your voice at a World Cup, that is a pretty acceptable way to do it.

Even Oasis’s Liam Gallagher approved. Gallagher tweeted his support after seeing the videos of Kane belting out the tune, writing “It’s hard work that singing Harry Kane cmon ENGLAND cmon WONDERWALL.” When Liam himself gives you the co sign, you have made it.

Kane deserved to enjoy the moment. His penalty in the 60th minute pushed England from a 2-1 lead to 3-1, which gave the Three Lions crucial breathing room. That cushion mattered because England had been reduced to 10 men after Jarell Quansah picked up a red card in the 54th minute.

Mexico did not give up. Raul Jimenez scored on his own penalty in the 69th minute to make it 3-2, and the last 20 plus minutes were a scramble as El Tri looked for the equalizer. England held on for the win, then let loose in front of their traveling supporters at the Azteca.

The Henderson injury put a damper on the party. The 36 year old midfielder tried to leap over the digital advertisement screen during the celebration and took a bad fall. Head coach Thomas Tuchel said Henderson suffered a serious wrist injury and needed to be taken to a hospital. Details on his tournament status are still to come.

For Kane, though, the night was a career milestone. He led England to a win at Mexico’s most iconic stadium, scored a huge penalty, and celebrated with fans who traveled thousands of miles to be there. Losing his voice in the process is a fair trade.

Next up for England is Norway on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Kane will have a full week to rest his vocal cords before that one. He probably should. Something tells me if England beats Norway, “Wonderwall” is coming out of the speakers again.
