Zay Flowers Signs $140 Million Extension With Ravens: Lamar Jackson Just Got His Franchise Receiver Long Term
Lamar Jackson needed the Ravens to keep his best weapon. On Tuesday, the Ravens did exactly that.
Zay Flowers and Baltimore agreed to a four-year, $140 million contract extension that includes $108 million guaranteed, per multiple reports. The $35 million per year average ties Flowers with Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson as the fourth-highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL. Flowers will not hit free agency until after the 2031 season under this deal.
He is 25 years old, turning 26 in September, and he just carried the Baltimore passing game to a career year. Flowers put up 1,211 receiving yards last season, which is 36.9 percent of the entire Ravens receiving output. He has led Baltimore in receptions and receiving yards in every single season of his career. When Lamar drops back and looks for a first read, Flowers is who he is looking at.
This is smart business. Baltimore does not have a long history of paying receivers big money. They came into the Jackson era with a run-first identity and a philosophical belief that quarterbacks make receivers rather than the other way around. This deal breaks with that instinct, and it should have.
Flowers is not just a possession slot receiver. He is a legitimate No. 1 target with the speed to threaten deep, the shiftiness to win after the catch, and the toughness to work across the middle. He also has a real chemistry with Jackson that has taken three years to develop. You do not throw that away and start over with a rookie.
The bigger context here is the state of the AFC North. Cincinnati is deep. Pittsburgh has Aaron Rodgers for one more year. Cleveland has been rebuilding on the fly. Baltimore has been the class of the division for most of the Jackson era, but they have not been able to close in January. Every offseason move has to be measured against whether it makes them a Super Bowl team, and locking up Flowers absolutely does that.
Pay attention to the guaranteed number. $108 million guaranteed is a huge commitment. The Ravens are betting on Flowers to stay healthy, stay productive, and stay their guy for at least the next four years. Given his usage rate and his slight frame, that is not a small bet.
What it also does is send a signal to Jackson. Baltimore is not running out the string on his prime. They are still building. They still want to win now. The Rashod Bateman experiment did not work, DeAndre Hopkins is not coming back, and they have shown zero interest in cycling through veteran retreads. Flowers is the receiver. Period.
The one open question is what the number does to the rest of the Baltimore cap sheet. Justin Madubuike, Kyle Hamilton, and a whole class of core defenders are approaching new deals. Eric DeCosta has always been aggressive about restructuring, but there is only so much cap gymnastics you can do before the bill comes due.
That is a problem for another summer. For now, the Ravens took care of their best receiver and told the AFC exactly what their intentions are.
