Von Miller is going home.
The eight-time Pro Bowler agreed to a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday. The contract is worth $5.5 million with $2 million in incentives that could push the value to $7.5 million. Miller enters his 15th NFL season with 138.5 career sacks, two Super Bowl rings, and a Super Bowl MVP trophy in his trophy case.
The Cowboys just added the perfect complement to Micah Parsons.
Miller grew up in DeSoto, Texas, less than an hour from AT&T Stadium. He starred at DeSoto High School, then became a first-team All-American at Texas A&M before the Broncos took him second overall in the 2011 draft. This deal is a full-circle moment that Cowboys fans have wanted for years.
The football fit works too. Miller is 37, and nobody expects him to put up 15 sacks. But he had nine sacks last season with the Washington Commanders, his most since 2021, and he still bends the edge better than plenty of guys 10 years younger. Rotational pass rush at his experience level is worth exactly what Dallas is paying.
Parsons plays on one edge. DeMarcus Lawrence has been the other. Adding Miller as a rotational third rusher means the Cowboys can keep both starters fresher in the fourth quarter and can throw more subpackages at opposing offenses. That matters in a division where Jayden Daniels and Jalen Hurts play in eight of your 17 games.
The room itself is a win. Miller is one of the most respected veterans in the NFL and has spent time mentoring younger pass rushers everywhere he has been. Parsons is 26 and still growing his game. Having Miller in the same meeting room every day should accelerate whatever moves Parsons is still learning.
The one worry is that Miller has always been a locker room lightning rod. He had a strange stretch in Buffalo that included legal issues and a torn ACL, and his second run in Denver ended awkwardly. Washington was clean for a year, but that was one season. Dallas is a bigger stage.
The Cowboys need pass rush. Their defense last year was a huge disappointment, and much of it came down to inconsistent pressure in the second half of games. Miller helps solve that problem. It might not be the biggest signing of the summer, but for a role player at this price it is a smart move.
Miller also joins a Cowboys team that is trying to reset its championship window. Dak Prescott is in the last real prime year of his career. CeeDee Lamb is a top-three receiver. If the defense can just be competent, this team can win 11 games and get a home playoff game. Miller helps get them there.
His quote after the signing said it all: “Let’s make this one special.” He gets to end his career playing for the team he grew up watching, in the state he grew up in, alongside the guy trying to be the next great Cowboys defender. That is a good final chapter for any player.
Cowboys open training camp with a lot more juice than they had 48 hours ago. Von Miller has always brought that everywhere he has gone.
