Vita Vea wants out of Tampa Bay, and the phones around the NFL are already ringing.
The two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle requested a trade from the Buccaneers on Sunday through his agent. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that interest around the league is “pretty heavy” for Vea, though he added that the Bucs have not entertained trade discussions and do not currently plan to move him.
The trade request stems from stalled contract talks. Vea is entering the final year of a four-year, $71 million deal. He is scheduled to make $18 million in 2026, but none of his $17 million salary is guaranteed. Vea is looking for a significant raise to catch up with the top of the defensive tackle market. Jeffery Simmons currently leads that market at $35.1 million per year, so there is a big gap to close.
Vea’s preferences for a landing spot are public. He wants to play for one of the three California teams closest to his Bay Area home, or the Las Vegas Raiders. That gives him the 49ers, Rams, Chargers, and Raiders as his preferred destinations.
The 49ers make the most sense on paper. San Francisco is always looking to upgrade its defensive line, and adding a player of Vea’s caliber to a unit that already features Nick Bosa would create nightmares for opposing offenses. The Rams have money to spend and would love a run-stuffer of Vea’s size. The Chargers are trying to prove they can build a real defense under Jim Harbaugh. The Raiders would love the storyline of bringing a Bay Area native home.
The problem is the price. Vea has significant contract demands, and any team that trades for him is going to need to hand him an extension immediately. That is not a small commitment for a 31-year-old defensive tackle whose game relies on physicality.
The Buccaneers have a legitimate reason to hold firm. Vea has been a foundational piece of their defense for years, and he still plays at an elite level. Losing him would create a massive hole up front that Tampa Bay does not have the depth to fill immediately. Even in a trade, they would want a first-round pick or better to move him, and any team paying that price is also going to have to negotiate a new deal.
For Todd Bowles and the Bucs defense, keeping Vea is a football imperative. He anchors the interior of the defensive line and eats up double teams that free up their edge rushers. Without him, the whole scheme takes a hit.
The tricky part is that Vea’s trade request creates real distraction. Even if Tampa Bay refuses to move him, having a star player publicly ask for a trade is a locker room issue. Bowles is going to have to manage that carefully.
The Bucs’ most likely path is to offer Vea an extension that at least gets closer to what he wants. A one or two-year add-on with a significant raise might get him back to happy without breaking the bank on a 32-plus year old at a physically demanding position.
If Tampa Bay refuses to budge on contract terms and keeps Vea for 2026, expect a distracted year and a much messier divorce next offseason. That is not the outcome anyone wants.
