Trevon Diggs just got the fresh start he needed.
The former Cowboys cornerback signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, ending months of speculation about his next destination and giving him a chance to rebuild his value with a defending champion. Financial terms have not been released, but the deal is reportedly incentive-heavy to protect Seattle against the injury history.
Diggs is not the player he was in 2021 anymore. He led the NFL with 11 interceptions that year and made two straight Pro Bowls. He has played just 23 games since 2023 due to a torn ACL, follow-up knee issues, and a late-season concussion last year that landed him on injured reserve after eight games and 25 tackles for Dallas.
The Cowboys had seen enough. Dallas cut Diggs in the spring, ate the cap hit, and moved on. Diggs promised the market a player closer to that 2021 version, but the actual offers were limited. Most teams saw the injury history and the flashes of inconsistent play and passed. The Seahawks did not.
Seattle needed the help. Their secondary took a beating last year, and the plan to sign Terrion Arnold has been stalled by his ongoing legal case. Nobody knows when Arnold will actually be cleared to play. Diggs gives the Seahawks an immediate starter at outside corner while they wait to see what happens with Arnold.
The scheme fit is real. Seattle wants their corners to press at the line and disrupt route timing, which is exactly what Diggs does best. His combination of size and ball skills is still there when he is healthy. If he stays on the field, this deal is going to look like one of the steals of the offseason.
That is the massive “if.” Diggs has had two knee surgeries. He is 27 years old and should be in the prime of his career, but his body has already put him through more than most cornerbacks his age. Seattle’s medical staff cleared him, but there is real risk in giving him snap-heavy responsibilities in September.
The Seahawks are betting they got him at the right price. A one-year deal caps their downside. If Diggs plays like his old self, they extend him next spring for real money. If he breaks down again, they moved on to something else in nine months. Low-risk, high-reward veteran signings like this are what smart teams do at this point in the offseason.
For Diggs, the situation could not be much better. He gets to play alongside Devon Witherspoon, one of the best young corners in football, which means he does not have to be a shutdown guy right away. He gets a defense that will pressure the quarterback and shorten the routes he has to cover. And he gets to be with the reigning Super Bowl champions.
Dallas fans have to feel weird about this one. Diggs was a first-round pick, a Pro Bowler in his second year, and the brother of Stefon Diggs. Now he is playing for the Seahawks. The Cowboys secondary took a huge step back last season, and watching him leave for the champs is going to sting if he actually stays healthy.
He will not face the Cowboys until the schedule sends Seattle to Dallas. That is a game everyone will circle.
Diggs gets his fresh start on a real contender. Now he just has to stay on the field.
