Tom Brady’s abrupt decision to retire from the NFL this offseason caught many off guard. Although age-wise it would make sense for the consensus GOAT to call it quits, everything he has said over the past few years points to a desire to play into his mid-to-late 40s.
So what gives? Why did he do it? And is this retirement permanent?
While Brady’s last few weeks as an active football player were mired in disaster both on and off the field, most still aren’t buying that he is gone for good.
Not only that – the consensus favorite to land him once he changes his mind are the San Francisco 49ers.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Brady eventually linking up with the Niners is viewed by many as an inevitability at this point.
“(I) got a great email,” he said. “I don’t know that the person wants his name to be shared, but it’s explaining what’s going on with Tom Brady. (It’s a) classic mid-life crisis. Step 1, a divorce from the Patriots. Step 2, a short-term relationship with a trophy girl … Buccaneers. Step 3, a late-night text to the high school sweetheart, a.k.a the 49ers.”
The rationale certainly makes sense.
“I’m telling you, it’s unavoidable,” Florio continued. “He’s not gonna lower himself to have to dirty himself the way Aaron Rodgers is. He’s gonna work it all behind the scenes. I just … I think he’s gonna be with the 49ers Week 1 (of the 2022 season).”
Brady has had himself quite the year. Between the clashes with coaches and cheating accusations, there is certainly enough there for anyone to throw their hands up and retire.

But Brady isn’t a regular person. He is cut from a different cloth. Because of that, him coming back feels inevitable.
And when he does ultimately make that triumphant return – it is increasingly looking like it will be to his hometown 49ers.
