The Pittsburgh Steelers might be about to make a hard call on Joey Porter Jr.
Multiple reports have connected Porter Jr. to potential trade discussions, driven by the fact that the cornerback is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The Steelers have not extended him, they have not signaled a serious intention to keep him long-term, and other teams are calling to gauge availability. That is the classic setup for a trade before or during the season.
The reported package being discussed is in the range of $30 million in value between what Pittsburgh would give up in cap space savings and what the Steelers could recoup in draft picks. That is real money and real capital.
Porter Jr. was a second-round pick in 2023 out of Penn State. He is the son of former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter, which has always made him a fan favorite in Pittsburgh regardless of performance. His actual production has been solid. He is a starting-caliber corner with legitimate size (6-foot-2) and physical coverage skills that translate well against big receivers. Not a shutdown corner. But a real starter.
The cap logic is what is driving this. Pittsburgh has been trying to reset its salary structure to open room to pay Kenny Pickett (or move on from him and pay someone else), keep TJ Watt happy long-term, and address the defensive line. Porter Jr. on a rookie deal was cheap. Porter Jr. on a market-value extension is not, and the Steelers have to decide whether to prioritize him or someone else.
The teams that would be interested are the usual cornerback-needy contenders. Cincinnati has real problems in the secondary. The Chiefs have been rebuilding at corner all offseason. The 49ers just lost Ricky Pearsall on offense but their defense has needs, too. Any of those teams could make a real offer.
For Pittsburgh, the alternative to trading is letting Porter Jr. walk in free agency for a compensatory pick that would come a year later and be worth less than any real trade return. Trading now maximizes value. Waiting risks getting nothing.
The counter-argument is football. The Steelers still want to make the playoffs this year, and cornerback is not a position where you willingly get worse. If Pittsburgh trades Porter Jr., who plays across from Darius Slay Jr.? The depth chart gets thin fast.
The most likely outcome is the Steelers holding onto Porter Jr. through the season and then losing him in free agency next spring. But if a real offer comes in with multiple picks, Omar Khan will have to at least consider it. Trade rumors this specific do not usually come from nowhere.
The next two weeks are the window. After that, Pittsburgh probably keeps him for the year.
