Shedeur Sanders Trade Rumors: Browns Quietly Listening to Offers

The Cleveland Browns may be willing to move on from Shedeur Sanders.
A report from Cleveland insider Tony Rizzo claimed that the Browns are listening to trade offers for the second-year quarterback. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com pushed back slightly, saying nothing had really changed in the open competition between Sanders and a recovering Deshaun Watson, and that offers for Sanders would be heard if he does not win the starting job.
Either way, the message is clear. Sanders is not guaranteed the long-term starting role in Cleveland, and the front office is at least open to the idea of moving him for the right price.
This is a fascinating situation. Sanders was drafted as the potential franchise quarterback. He was selected to be the long-term answer at the position after the Browns gave up on the post-Deshaun Watson timeline. He has flashes of real talent. He also has flashes of immaturity that have reportedly frustrated the coaching staff.
Watson is in the middle of his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon. He is on track to return for training camp, though there are still questions about how quickly he can get back to full form. The Browns are paying him a fortune. They cannot just walk away from that contract. So the path forward is essentially Watson winning the starting job, with Sanders as the insurance plan.
The trade market for Sanders, if Cleveland actually shops him, would be interesting. He is on a rookie contract, which makes him affordable. He has the bloodlines, the marketing potential, and enough on-field promise to justify a real package. Teams looking for a young developmental quarterback would line up.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have been mentioned as a possible destination. They have ongoing quarterback questions and a tradition of valuing rookie deals. The New York Giants are another team that could make sense, especially if Daniel Jones’s situation deteriorates further.
The complication is that Sanders himself has reportedly expressed frustration with the situation in Cleveland. The Browns have been a mess at the position for years. Watching Watson get the chance to come back and reclaim a job is not the kind of thing that builds patience in a young quarterback. Sanders wants to start, and he wants to start now.
If the Browns are open to dealing him, they would need to extract real value. A first-round pick for a young quarterback with promise is the floor, especially for a player like Sanders with his marketing appeal. The Browns might also be able to package him with their second-round pick to move up in next year’s draft.
The other possibility, of course, is that Sanders wins the open competition and Watson becomes the trade chip. That is much harder to execute given his contract, but the Browns have reportedly explored ways to move on from Watson at the right price.
What this tells you about Cleveland is that the franchise is still searching for stability at the most important position in football. The Watson trade was a disaster. The Sanders draft pick was supposed to fix it. The reality is messier than either side hoped.
Training camp will be the moment of truth. If Sanders outplays Watson clearly, the Browns will probably stick with him and hope to deal Watson eventually. If Watson looks like his old self, Sanders becomes the trade chip and the Browns reset the quarterback room.
The drama is real. The future is uncertain. And the Browns are once again the center of NFL quarterback chaos.
