For the past few weeks, NFL Twitter has been arguing about how old Sauce really is. Different databases listed different years. Old high school articles had a different number than his draft profile. Conspiracy theories ran wild. Gardner had enough.
“I’m 25, I’ve always been 25, and the internet needs to relax,” Gardner said in a video posted to his social media. He flashed his ID, made a joke about needing to officially confirm his birthday to NFL fans, and moved on.
How this even became a story is honestly kind of impressive. Sauce was the third overall pick by the Jets in 2022. He’s been one of the most visible defensive players in the league since the moment he stepped onto an NFL field. There is more information about him than about most non-quarterbacks in the sport.
The confusion started when a fan dug up a youth football roster that listed him at a slightly older age than his draft bio. From there it spiraled, with people pointing to old yearbook photos and freshman college articles. None of it actually proved anything, but the internet doesn’t need proof to start a story.
This is the kind of dumb subplot that follows famous athletes around forever once it gets started.
