The 49ers’ receiver room just got thinner.
Ricky Pearsall is out for the entire 2026 season after undergoing PCL surgery. That is a full year gone before it started. San Francisco is going to have to figure out its receiver depth on the fly, and this comes with the roster already thinner than the front office wanted heading into a Super Bowl-contending year.
PCL tears are not as common as ACL injuries, but they carry a similar recovery timeline. Nine to twelve months of rehab. No shortcut. Pearsall will not be on the field until 2027, and even then the first few months will be about getting back to full speed rather than being an impact player. This is a real setback for a young receiver who was supposed to take a step forward this year.
Pearsall was the 49ers’ first-round pick in 2024. His rookie year was cut short before it started when he was shot in a robbery attempt in San Francisco last August. He recovered, made it back to play in nine games, and finished the year with 400 yards and 3 touchdowns. He looked like a real developmental piece heading into 2025 and 2026.
The story from that off-field incident was inspiring, and Pearsall’s ability to play at all after being shot in the chest speaks to how hard he worked to get back. Losing him now to a football injury is a cruel twist. The kid deserved a healthy season. He is not getting one.
For the 49ers, this puts pressure on Brandon Aiyuk to be fully healthy, on Deebo Samuel Sr. to be on the field, and on Jauan Jennings and Ronnie Bell to fill increased snap counts. Kyle Shanahan’s system spreads targets around, and the offense does not need a 100-catch WR1 to function. But losing the WR3 spot to injury forces the coaching staff to lean harder on tight end usage and running back receiving, and both of those have their own limits.
Christian McCaffrey remains the safety valve. Brock Purdy has never had a healthy full receiver room in his career, so this is not a new challenge for him. But the margin for injury just got tighter across the offense.
The 49ers could be active on the waiver wire and the trade market. There will be receivers cut before Week 1 as teams get to 53 players, and San Francisco has the cap space and draft capital to add. Do not be surprised if a veteran name gets connected to the 49ers in the next two weeks.
For Pearsall, this is the second lost season in three years. He has already proven he can come back from worse. The 49ers just need to hope 2027 gives him the clean shot he has been missing.
