Panthers Trading Cam Newton To AFC Contender

Are the Panthers trading Cam Newton to an AFC contender?

The Panthers are in the midst of a rebuild.

It started with the late-season firing of then head coach Ron Rivera.

The changes continued with the recruitment and eventual hiring of former Baylor head coach, Matt Rhule.

Rhule, from there, went out and recruited LSU offensive guru Joe Brady.

Then the Panthers informed tight end Greg Olsen and they were going their separate ways this past week.

Now it looks like there will be another change – this time at quarterback.

According to ESPN NFL analyst Marcus Spears, Newton may be bound for the Tennessee Titans.

Spears appeared on ESPN’s Get Up this morning and suggested that the 30-year-old former MVP may end up with the AFC runner-ups from this past year.

“Cam, if he’s healthy, is a better version of Ryan Tannehill,” Spears said.

Although the Titans have indicated a desire to re-sign Tannehill, it is also undeniable that he does not bring the same of weapons to the table that a healthy Newton does.

With a combination of Newton at quarterback and Derrick Henry at running back, Tennessee would suddenly be a very real challenge to the Kansas City Chiefs’ claim over the AFC.

Although Newton has publicly expressed a desire to remain in Carolina, privately he appears to understand that a change is inevitable.

Will the Titans be able to gather the assets necessary to make a move for Newton?

We’ll find out over the next month.
