Panthers Rookie WR Chris Brazzell II to Miss Season After Torn LCL

The Carolina Panthers just lost their promising rookie wide receiver for the entire season, and it happened before he ever caught a regular-season pass.
Chris Brazzell II will undergo season-ending knee surgery to repair a torn LCL, the team announced this week. It is a devastating blow for a player who was drafted in the third round back in April to help fix Carolina’s receiver problems.
Brazzell suffered the injury during training camp practice. That is the worst possible time to lose a rookie you are counting on. He was building chemistry with quarterback Bryce Young, learning the offense, and starting to make plays down the field. All of that is on hold for a full year now.
The Panthers spent the No. 83 overall pick on Brazzell in the 2026 draft. He was one of the more athletic receivers available at that spot, coming from Tennessee where he had a productive senior year. The scouting reports loved his size and long speed. Carolina was hoping to get an immediate contributor and a long-term piece at the position.
Instead, they get a redshirt year for a player they were counting on to help right away. That is a real problem for a franchise that has been trying to build around Bryce Young and has struggled to give him legitimate weapons.
The Panthers’ receiver room now looks thin. Xavier Legette is expected to take a big step in his second year, but he is not yet a No. 1 target. Adam Thielen provides some veteran presence but is well past his prime. Diontae Johnson has bounced around the league and is more of a rotational piece than a difference maker at this stage of his career.
That is not a group that scares anyone. Losing Brazzell means Carolina is going to have to lean on Legette even more than expected. If Legette gets hurt or does not develop, this offense is in real trouble.
The bigger picture around Bryce Young is what everyone is watching. Young was a top-of-the-draft pick who has been through more chaos than any young quarterback should be in his first two seasons. Multiple offensive coordinators. Multiple head coaches. A revolving door of receivers. He has never been given a stable environment to develop.
Carolina drafted Brazzell specifically to be part of the solution. Every loss like this makes Young’s job harder. He needs weapons that can win one-on-one matchups. He needs guys who can run separation routes. He needs speed to stretch the field. Brazzell was supposed to provide the speed piece.
The Panthers will now have to look at free agency or the trade market to fill the void. There are not a lot of quality receivers available on the free market at this point of the summer. The best options would come via trade, but Carolina’s front office has already made it clear they are trying to build through the draft rather than shipping picks out for veteran help.
There is also a real conversation to be had about training camp injury rates. Every year there are stories like this one, with young players losing entire seasons before they ever play a game that matters. Camp is brutal on rookie bodies still adjusting to the NFL grind. Some teams are experimenting with shorter camp schedules and more controlled reps.
The Panthers open the season on September 6 against the Jaguars. Brazzell will not be on the field. Bryce Young will be scrambling for extra time again. And Carolina fans will be wondering when their team finally catches a break.
Get well soon, Chris. This one hurts.
