NFL Training Camps 2026: Five Storylines to Watch as Teams Report

NFL training camps are almost here. Seattle’s rookies report July 17, and the rest of the league follows through the end of the month. It is the unofficial start of a new football season, and there are storylines everywhere.

Let us break down the biggest camp storylines that will define the 2026 season. These are the things worth actually paying attention to when your team’s first practice video hits social media.

Start with the Kansas City Chiefs and their new Mahomes contract. The Chiefs just made Patrick Mahomes the richest player in NFL history. Half a billion dollars. That kind of contract creates pressure. Watch how Mahomes and the team handle expectations coming out of camp. Are they hungry, or comfortable? Are they finding new ways to attack defenses, or running back the same playbook?

The Chiefs have won three of the last seven Super Bowls. They have set the standard. Every camp, other teams try to figure out how to beat them. Every camp, Kansas City raises the bar. This year, with all the financial commitment locked in, the pressure to keep winning is bigger than ever.

The next big camp storyline is the Cleveland Browns and their quarterback situation. Deshaun Watson is still not right physically. The team drafted a quarterback in the first round. There will be a real competition at camp. If Watson cannot go, the rookie starts. If he can go, we still have to see the offense look competent for the first time in years.

Cleveland’s roster is talented. They have Amari Cooper. They have a good offensive line. Their defense is elite. What they need is a functioning quarterback situation. Camp will tell us a lot about which direction Kevin Stefanski is going.

The third storyline is the New York Giants and their new head coach. The Giants hired a rookie head coach last offseason after firing Brian Daboll. The new coach has been putting his system in place, and now camp is his first real test.

The Giants have some pieces. Malik Nabers is a stud receiver. The pass rush is legitimate. But the quarterback situation is a mess. Whoever wins the starting job at camp will define what the Giants are next season. Fans are hoping for progress.

The fourth storyline is the Miami Dolphins. Mike McDaniel is back. Tua Tagovailoa is back. Tyreek Hill is back after some off-field drama last season. The team has retained its core, but the roster has aged and injuries are always a concern. Camp is where Miami has to prove they still have championship-level ambition.

The Dolphins have talent. They have coaching. They have not been to a conference championship game with this group. Something has to change. Watch McDaniel’s practice tempo. Watch the defense’s new schemes. Watch how Tua handles the pressure.

The fifth storyline is the wave of rookie quarterbacks who need to develop. The 2026 NFL Draft was heavy on quarterbacks, and several teams took swings in the first round. All of them need reps in camp to figure out the pro game. The teams that develop their rookies quickly will jump into contention. The ones that do not will start over again in 2027.

Camp is where a rookie quarterback learns the speed of the NFL. It is where he learns to read defenses at pro tempo. It is where he learns to handle pressure. Some rookies show up ready. Others need a year. Watch the film out of camp to see which is which.

Beyond those five, there are other things to watch. Injury updates on stars like Nick Bosa and Christian McCaffrey. Position battles at running back for teams like the Falcons and Bengals. New offensive schemes at teams like the Bears and Panthers. Camp reveals everything.

The Detroit Lions are the popular pick to win the NFC. Camp will tell us if they have the same edge that took them to the NFC Championship a couple of years ago. Dan Campbell keeps everyone hungry. The offense is loaded. The defense is deeper than ever. Detroit is set up to dominate.

The Baltimore Ravens are the AFC favorite outside of Kansas City. Lamar Jackson is still one of the best players in football. Derrick Henry is still productive despite his age. The defense is talented. Camp will reveal if John Harbaugh’s team is ready to break through and finally get past the Chiefs in the playoffs.

The San Francisco 49ers are trying to bounce back after a rough 2025 season. Kyle Shanahan needs to prove he can still put together a championship roster. Brock Purdy is the quarterback of the future. Camp will show us if the pieces are still there to make a run at the NFC.

The Philadelphia Eagles have retooled after their disappointing 2024 season. Jalen Hurts is under pressure. Nick Sirianni is on the hot seat. Every camp practice will be dissected for signs that the Eagles are back or truly falling apart.

Training camp does not tell you everything about a team. Preseason games get overrated. Practice reps are often meaningless out of context. But camp does tell you about culture, energy, and the mood of a team heading into the regular season. Pay attention.

My prediction: The Chiefs, Ravens, Lions, and 49ers are the four best teams coming out of camp. The Browns, Giants, and Panthers are still figuring it out. Rookie quarterbacks will have mixed results. And by Labor Day, we will already be talking about the first surprise team of the year. That is football.
