Jimmy Garoppolo’s days with the San Francisco 49ers appear to be numbered. Although both sides are saying all the right things at the moment, a trade feels imminent.
After throwing for 314 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, Garoppolo came back in Week 2 versus the Philadelphia Eagles and recorded 189 yards and 1 touchdown.
Through two games, both wins, Garoppolo has averaged 9.15 yards per pass attempt. Make of that what you will.
Between the way head coach Kyle Shanahan is talking about rookie quarterback Trey Lance and Garoppolo’s increasingly apparent frustration with his situation, the writing is on the wall.
Something needs to give.
According to NFL insider John Middlekauff, two teams make a lot of sense for Garoppolo at the moment: the Washington Football Team and New York Giants.

“I actually think he makes a lot of sense for both franchises,” he said.
The Giants are currently 0-2 for the eighth time in the last nine seasons. Third-year quarterback Daniel Jones, it has now become evident, will not be the franchise savior most hoped he would turn into after his hot 2019 start.
Last week Jones completed 22-of-32 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown in the team’s 30-29 defeat at the hands of the Washington Football Team, but the lasting memory from that outing is this play:

The Washington Football Team, meanwhile, rode Taylor Heinicke to victory last week against New York – but the cupboard is pretty bare when it comes to the team’s passing unit.
Could Garoppolo be a fit?
There has been chatter of head coach Ron Rivera perhaps having interest in another available veteran passer to step in and offer some support while Ryan Fitzpatrick recovers, but Garoppolo would objectively be the more proven option.

One way or another, the 49ers will need to make a decision on Garoppolo sooner rather than later. And whatever that decision ends up being, it could result in massive ramifications for the NFC East.
