Tom Brady On Why Nobody Wanted To Draft Shedeur Sanders

Tom Brady On Why Nobody Wanted To Draft Shedeur Sanders

In the recent NFL Draft, quarterback Shedeur Sanders experienced an unexpected slide, falling to the fifth round before finally receiving a call.

Despite being considered a likely selection for several teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders, Sanders watched as organizations repeatedly passed on him during the draft process. The former Colorado Buffaloes standout had to endure the disappointment of waiting through multiple days before finding his professional home.

NFL legend Tom Brady, who has a mentorship relationship with Sanders, reached out during this challenging time. Brady, who famously was selected 199th overall in his own draft, texted words of encouragement to the young quarterback.

His message emphasized that draft position matters less than what happens afterward, reminding Sanders that a player’s first day in the NFL is just the beginning of their journey. Despite having an ownership stake in the Raiders, a team that opted not to select Sanders, Brady’s personal connection with the quarterback prompted him to offer motivation during this pivotal career moment.

Tom Brady Discloses What He Told Shedeur Sanders After His Surprising Slip

NFL legend Tom Brady recently revealed the encouraging text message he sent to quarterback Shedeur Sanders following his unexpected slide in the 2025 NFL Draft. During an appearance on Logan Paul’s “Impaulsive” podcast, Brady shared how he reached out to Sanders after the young quarterback wasn’t selected in the early rounds.

“Day 2 matters more than the NFL Draft,” Brady explained, drawing from his own experience as the 199th pick. “Who can speak on it better than me? Use it as motivation. You’re gonna get your chances… go take advantage of it.”

Brady, who now holds an ownership stake in the Las Vegas Raiders, clarified that he wasn’t involved in his team’s draft evaluation process. The timing of Brady’s advice proved particularly relevant as Sanders ultimately fell to the 144th overall pick, where the Cleveland Browns selected him in the fifth round.

The drop was surprising to many draft analysts who had projected Sanders to be taken much earlier. Despite the Browns not being among Sanders’ preferred destinations (he reportedly favored the Giants and Raiders), the quarterback now has a chance to prove himself in Cleveland.

Brady’s message emphasizes a philosophy that has defined his career—draft position matters less than what a player does with their opportunity. For Sanders, this wisdom from one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history might serve as valuable motivation as he begins his professional journey with the Browns.
