Cowboys Negotiation With Dak Prescott Take Ugly Turn

The Cowboys’ negotiations with Dak Prescott took an ugly turn this week.

Heading into the offseason, all Dallas management could talk about was how re-signing their starting quarterback was a top priority.

According to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his various cohorts, a deal between Prescott and the organization is inevitable.

Or at least it was.

On Sunday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed that Dallas would “likely” have to use the franchise tag on Prescott, since a deal was not in fact on the horizon.

In Schefter’s own words, contract talks between the Cowboys and Prescott “remain at an impasse.”

That is obviously problematic for many reasons.

This past year, Prescott played out the final year of his rookie contract for a mere $2 million.

That offered Dallas one of the league’s biggest bargains at quarterback.

Now he wants a pay raise.

Prescott is reportedly seeking to be paid as one of the league’s top-tier quarterbacks – something upwards of $35 million.

If the Cowboys franchise tag him, Prescott will be locked up for a year at approximately $27 million.

That is way less money than what the young star was hoping to come away with this summer.

In 2019, Prescott recorded 4,902 yards and came a yard shy of setting a single-season franchise record.

There was optimism that ultimately the Cowboys and Prescott would be able to come to an agreement before the start of next season, but it is increasingly looking like that will not happen.
