Mike Tomlin gets brutally honest about why the Steelers benched Mason Rudolph in a recent interview.
Somehow Pittsburgh has remained in the postseason hunt despite being ravaged with injuries on offense all year long.
This past week the team benched Rudolph, their backup quarterback, in favor of Devlin Hodges during their game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Hodges had shown some flashes of potential when he replaced an injured Rudolph earlier this year, and he ended up going 5-for-11 with 118 yards and a score.
Following the Steelers’ 16-10 victory over the lowly Bengals, many wondered whether Hodges would take over as Pittsburgh’s star.
On Tuesday, Tomlin confirmed that he would.
When pressed on why, the head coach’s response was short and sweet: “He has not killed us.”

Ouch.
So far over the course of three games Hodges has thrown for 318 yards, two scores and a pick on 27-40 passing. His 67.5 completion percentage is slightly higher than the 61.6 that Rudolph has put up.
Will Hodges ultimately be able to cement himself as the permanent starter going forward?
A lot of that will depend on how he performs versus the Cleveland Browns this weekend.
