Kayshon Boutte Is a Real Patriots Trade Candidate the Rookie WR Is Playing His Way Out of New England
Kayshon Boutte is going to end up on somebody’s team this season. The odds it is New England are getting slimmer by the day.
The Patriots wide receiver, entering the final year of his rookie contract, has been the subject of trade rumors as he flashes early in training camp. Boutte has looked good in Foxboro. That, unfortunately for him, might be why other teams are calling. And that is why New England is listening.
The Patriots are in a tricky spot at wide receiver. Head coach Mike Vrabel took over this offseason and has been rebuilding the roster in his image. That means valuing veteran presence, physical play, and blocking. Boutte, while talented, does not necessarily fit the archetype Vrabel is trying to establish. The team also brought in additional receivers this offseason, adding depth that has pushed Boutte down the depth chart.
Then there is the money. Boutte is playing on a rookie deal that expires after this season. He will be a restricted free agent next spring. The Patriots have to decide whether to tender him, whether to negotiate a long-term extension, or whether to let him walk. Trading him now would give them a return before losing him for essentially nothing.
Multiple teams have reportedly called about Boutte’s availability. Nobody is confirming details, but the trade market for capable young wideouts is warm. Injuries around the league create needs. Some team is going to be desperate for receiver help by the end of preseason, and Boutte becomes a natural target.
Boutte is 24. He was a second-round pick out of LSU. He has flashed real ability at times but has never quite put together the kind of full season the Patriots were hoping for when they drafted him. Last year he caught 43 passes for 552 yards and three touchdowns in a run-heavy offense that did not exactly cater to his skill set.
He is now doing exactly what a player in his position needs to do. He is showing well in camp. He is making plays. He is putting his best on tape. That either convinces the Patriots to keep him and give him a bigger role, or it convinces another team to give up something in trade.
Boutte would fit well in a variety of offenses. He is a good route runner. He has legitimate speed. He can win outside or in the slot. Some team looking for a WR2 or WR3 with upside is going to see him as an ideal fit.
The Patriots also have to think about their broader plan. They are not a Super Bowl contender in 2026. Drake Maye is still developing at quarterback. The team is trying to build toward being competitive again over the next couple of years. If they can flip a player who might not be part of that future for a draft pick that helps them build, that is a smart move.
Trading Boutte would not be popular in New England. Fans see the potential. Fans want the team to develop young talent rather than trade it away. But sometimes the right move for the franchise is to cash in a player before he walks in free agency.
The trade rumors are only going to intensify as the preseason progresses. If Boutte continues to play well, offers are going to increase. And at some point, the Patriots are going to have to make a decision that either commits to Boutte or ships him out.
