Jonathan Greenard is not going anywhere. The Minnesota Vikings made sure of that Wednesday, agreeing to a four-year, $100 million extension with the star pass rusher.
The deal includes $50 million fully guaranteed. That puts Greenard among the highest-paid edge rushers in football and cements him as a foundation piece for the next half-decade in Minnesota.
This one has been coming. Greenard has been the Vikings best defensive player since arriving from Houston in free agency two years ago. He had 12.5 sacks last season. He had 45 pressures. He was a Pro Bowl selection and a legitimate All-Pro snub.
Now he is paid like the elite pass rusher he has become.
The timing is smart for Minnesota. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has been aggressive locking up his young stars. Justin Jefferson got his massive extension. J.J. McCarthy is on his rookie deal for two more years. T.J. Hockenson got his money. Now Greenard.
The Vikings are building around a core that they control long-term. That is how you win in the modern NFL. You lock up your best players before they hit free agency and you avoid the auction market.
Greenard is 28 years old. The four-year term takes him through his age-32 season, which is when edge rushers often start to slow down. That gives Minnesota four prime years. Fair value.
The scheme fit has been almost perfect. Head coach Kevin O Connell inherited an aging defense when he took over three years ago. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores has completely revamped the unit. Greenard, along with Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner, has given the Vikings a legitimate three-headed pass rush.
They ranked in the top five in sacks and pressure rate last season. They terrorized quarterbacks. And they showed opposing offenses that the days of running a soft finesse offense against Minnesota are over.
Greenard has been the ringleader. He is the best pure edge rusher Flores has, and his motor is elite. He gets after quarterbacks on every snap. He plays the run at a high level. He is the kind of defender you build around.
The money is fair for both sides. Greenard was heading toward free agency next spring, where he would have almost certainly gotten more than $25 million per year on the open market. The Vikings essentially bought him out of that free agency period at a slight discount by offering the security of the extension now.
He gets guaranteed money. They get to keep their pass rusher. Everybody wins.
The bigger implication is what this means for the roster construction. The Vikings now have massive contracts to Jefferson, Greenard, and eventually McCarthy when his extension comes due in 2027. That is a lot of money tied up in three players.
Adofo-Mensah is essentially forcing himself to build depth through the draft and cheap free agent signings. That is the correct approach when you have three superstars locked up. You do not overpay the middle-tier guys. You develop them yourself and rotate them out when their contracts come due.
Minnesota is set up to compete in the NFC North for the next five years. The Packers, Bears, and Lions are all fighting for the same division. The Vikings just gave themselves a real edge.
Jonathan Greenard is a huge part of that. And he is a Viking for four more years.
