JJ McCarthy Injury Update: Vikings QB Facing Multi-Week Absence With Sprained Ankle

The Minnesota Vikings cannot catch a break with JJ McCarthy.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that McCarthy has a sprained ankle that qualifies as a multi-week injury. The Vikings had been optimistic throughout last week that he would be ready for the season opener. That is no longer the case, and Minnesota now has to figure out how to open 2026 with Carson Wentz under center.

McCarthy hurt the ankle in the Aug. 22 preseason game against the Ravens. He skipped the preseason finale as a precaution. He got through scaled-down practices Monday and Tuesday last week and then could not go on Wednesday. The Vikings tried to talk themselves into a Week 1 return. The medical staff and the tape did not cooperate.

This is not a franchise-altering injury. Ankle sprains heal. McCarthy will be back. What it does mean is that Kevin O’Connell has to spend the first few weeks of the season with a Plan B quarterback, and the entire Vikings offense was built on Plan A.

Wentz is a real backup. He has starter’s experience, a big arm, and he knows the O’Connell system well enough to run it competently. He is not going to unlock Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison the way McCarthy was supposed to.

That is the practical problem. McCarthy was going to be the story of the season for Minnesota. He was going to prove that the Vikings’ offensive design travels regardless of who is throwing the ball. He was going to remind everyone why the front office parked their franchise on a quarterback who did not play his rookie year and only got one full offseason as the starter.

Instead, the Vikings open the season with a stopgap and hope McCarthy is back by Week 3 or 4.

The bigger concern is the injury history. This is now the second time in as many years that a lower-body injury has forced Minnesota to adjust plans around McCarthy. The 2024 knee injury cost him his entire rookie year. The 2026 ankle sprain costs him at least the start of Year 2.

Ankles can turn into chronic problems if they are not treated correctly. The Vikings have the medical staff and the resources to give McCarthy every chance to heal fully before he is back on the field. That is what they have to do. Rushing him back for Week 3 to save a home game against a team they should beat with Wentz is the wrong choice.

The NFC North is not going to wait. Green Bay is loaded. Chicago has weapons. Detroit is still the class of the division. Minnesota starting 1-3 or 2-2 before McCarthy returns is very much on the table, and that changes the shape of their season.

The Vikings have to be patient. McCarthy has to be patient too. It is not what anyone wants three weeks into the season, but it is where the Vikings are.
