Jim Harbaugh’s ‘Locked, Cocked, Ready to Rock’ Line on Justin Herbert Sets Off Chargers Fans
Jim Harbaugh went on the Pat McAfee Show, and once again, we got peak Harbaugh.
Asked about Justin Herbert heading into 2026, the Chargers head coach fired off a line that spread across NFL social media within minutes. “He’s locked, cocked, ready to rock, and he’s in a great place,” Harbaugh said. The Chargers’ social team turned it into a graphic within the hour.
Chargers fans immediately split into two camps: those who loved the confidence and those who feared that Harbaugh had just jinxed the season.
The whole appearance was classic Harbaugh. He also told McAfee that Herbert is the best quarterback there has ever been, which is the kind of quote that will get replayed every time Herbert throws a bad pick this fall. But when you cut through the hyperbole, Harbaugh’s actual point stands up.
Herbert is coming off his first playoff win. The Chargers won 11 games in 2025, took the AFC West, and Herbert put up better numbers than most people remember. He was efficient, aggressive down the field, and started to look like the version of himself that Chargers fans have been waiting for since he was drafted.
The offseason continued the run. Herbert has spent the summer refining footwork with the Chargers coaching staff, an approach the team pushed publicly at minicamp. Add in the offseason engagement to pop star Madison Beer, and you have a quarterback who looks locked in on and off the field.
Harbaugh’s job is to sell his guy. It is also his job to actually believe in his guy, and that part is not fake. Harbaugh has always had an all-in style with his quarterbacks. He backed Andrew Luck loudly at Stanford, backed Colin Kaepernick with the 49ers, and backed J.J. McCarthy at Michigan. Now Herbert is his guy in Los Angeles.
The line is going to age well or age poorly, and there is no in between. If Herbert takes the leap into legitimate MVP territory this year, “locked, cocked, ready to rock” becomes a Chargers T-shirt by Week 4. If Herbert throws three picks in the season opener at Kansas City, it becomes a meme forever.
That is the deal with Harbaugh. He does not do bland coach speak. Everything is turned up two clicks, and every quote is either going to look prophetic or ridiculous depending on how the games go.
What matters is that the Chargers finally have alignment. Harbaugh is the perfect coach for Herbert’s calm, mechanical style because he pushes the emotional temperature of the whole building. The Chargers under previous regimes felt low-energy. This one does not.
Fans can complain about the quote all they want. Herbert now plays for a coach who publicly calls him the best quarterback ever. That is not a bad place to start the season.
Now Herbert just has to go prove it. The season opener at Arrowhead on September 10 is going to be the loudest possible stage.
