Jayden Higgins Torn ACL: Texans Rookie Wideout Lost for the Season

The Houston Texans just lost one of their most promising young receivers. Jayden Higgins tore his ACL and is out for the entire 2026 season, a devastating blow for a Texans passing game that was counting on him to be a rotational piece behind Nico Collins and Tank Dell.

Higgins was drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Iowa State. He had a solid rookie season and was expected to take a real step forward in year two. Preseason reports had him carving out a bigger role in the offense. Now the season is over before it starts.

ACL injuries in football have become a routine part of the sport, but the recovery timeline is still 9 to 12 months for a full return. Higgins is looking at rehab through the offseason and probably a limited role for the 2027 preseason. That is a long road for a young player who was just starting to build momentum.

The Texans have to figure out how to replace him. Nico Collins is the No. 1 receiver. Tank Dell is coming back from his own leg injury. Christian Kirk is the veteran slot. Beyond that, the depth is thin. Houston might be looking at the waiver wire or a small trade to add a veteran presence.

C.J. Stroud is the reason the receivers matter so much. Stroud is one of the most accurate young quarterbacks in the league, but he needs weapons to unlock the offense. Losing Higgins takes away a piece of the puzzle that was supposed to be growing every week.

DeMeco Ryans has built the Texans into a real contender in the AFC South. The team has won the division two straight years and made it to the AFC Divisional round last season. The window for a Super Bowl run is now open. Losing key players before the season starts makes that window smaller.

The AFC South is competitive. The Colts have Anthony Richardson healthy. The Jaguars added pieces around Trevor Lawrence. The Titans are rebuilding but have some young talent. Houston cannot afford to give any wins away.

Higgins was drafted with high expectations. Second-round pick out of a solid college program. NFL bloodlines. Good size and hands. The Texans invested in him because they saw a starter down the line. That development timeline is now pushed back by a full year.

The fantasy football impact is significant for anyone drafting Texans players. Nico Collins’s ceiling goes up because he is going to see more targets. Tank Dell’s health becomes even more important. The tight end position could see more looks too. Kyle Pitts was signed in the offseason for exactly this reason.

The medical staff in Houston is going to be busy this fall. Between Dell’s rehab, Higgins’s injury, and other soft-tissue concerns from training camp, the Texans have to manage a roster that is dealing with several health questions. Ryans has always emphasized depth for exactly this reason.

For Higgins personally, the mental side of the recovery is going to be as important as the physical. A young player in year two of his career, watching from the sideline while his team competes, is a hard experience. His teammates and coaches will need to keep him engaged.

The Texans are still a Super Bowl contender. Losing a rotational piece does not change that. But the margin for error just got a little smaller. Every game is going to matter more. Every other receiver needs to step up.

Houston opens the season against the Rams in a matchup that suddenly looks even more difficult given the Rams’ defensive additions. The Texans passing game is going to have to figure out how to move the ball with one fewer weapon than they planned.
