Jayden Daniels is back on a football field Saturday against the Detroit Lions. It will be his first real game action since December 7, 2025, when a lost season finally caught up with the Commanders’ franchise quarterback.
Washington has been holding its breath for eight months. Daniels is healthy, active, and cleared for full contact against Detroit.
The Commanders’ whole season depends on this guy staying upright. Everything else is decoration.
Dan Quinn played this smart. Daniels sat out preseason week one against Miami. Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs sat too. The starters get their first live snaps in Detroit on a controlled snap count, then get wrapped in bubble wrap until Week 1.
Preseason usage is always a debate. Bill Belichick would tell you never play your quarterback in August. Andy Reid would tell you they need the timing reps. Quinn is splitting the difference by giving Daniels one or two series to shake off the rust.
The 2025 season was a disaster wrapped in an injury report. Daniels was pulled from pillar to post, playing behind an offensive line that could not protect a fire hydrant. Every ugly hit, every rushed throw, every scramble that ended in a slam felt like it was leading to exactly what happened in December.
Washington rebuilt the trenches this offseason with real money. Laremy Tunsil is now in the fold. That helps, until it does not, because Tunsil is already dealing with an injury of his own during training camp.
The larger problem is that the Commanders have not figured out how to protect Daniels from himself. He plays with the recklessness of a running back and the arm talent of a top-five quarterback. Those two things do not coexist forever.
Kliff Kingsbury has to design an offense that gets the ball out faster. Fewer designed runs on early downs. More quick game to McLaurin and Diggs. Daniels does not need to prove he is tough. He needs to prove he can survive seventeen games.
The backup situation makes this even more urgent. Marcus Mariota sprained his MCL in the preseason opener and is out at least two weeks. If Daniels goes down again, the season goes with him.
Washington was a game from the Super Bowl two seasons ago behind a rookie who looked untouchable. Then reality hit. The NFC East is a meat grinder, and the Eagles are still the class of the division.
My take. Saturday is not about touchdowns or completions. It is about watching Daniels take one clean hit, get up, and jog back to the huddle. If he does, Washington has a real season ahead. If he does not, the Commanders are back to square one with a franchise quarterback who might already be on borrowed time.
Ninety minutes of preseason football have never mattered more in Washington.
