Jamal Adams is going to Minnesota.
The three-time Pro Bowl safety turned linebacker announced Monday night on social media that he had agreed to a one-year contract with the Vikings, posting “Year 10” with a #skol hashtag. Adams, 30, is joining defensive coordinator Brian Flores’ unit for the 2026 season and gives Minnesota another versatile defender in a scheme that thrives on hybrid players.
This is a fit that makes a lot of sense on paper. Adams spent most of last season as a converted linebacker for the Las Vegas Raiders, registering 45 tackles including five for loss, a sack, two quarterback hits, and a forced fumble in 17 games with four starts. Nothing there jumps off the page, but the tape showed he can still contribute in a rotational role and be useful on subpackage downs.
The Vikings’ front office has a personal connection here. General manager Nolan Teasley was part of the front office that traded for Adams to bring him to the Seattle Seahawks in a blockbuster with the New York Jets before the 2020 season. That relationship dating back years is a big reason why this deal came together quickly once Adams hit the market.
Adams also fits a scheme need. Flores runs an aggressive, blitz-heavy, position-flexible defense that requires hybrid pieces to disguise coverages and pressure at the line of scrimmage. Adams’ history as a first-team All-Pro safety and now a functional linebacker means he can bounce between roles depending on down and distance.
The reality of Adams’ career is that he was one of the most electrifying young defensive players in the league early on. He earned Pro Bowl honors in three of his first four seasons, made All-Pro in 2019, and became one of the faces of the Jets defense before the trade to Seattle. Injuries and diminished production followed. He has spent the last few seasons trying to find a role that fits his current skill set instead of the one he had at 24.
At this point in his career, Adams is a smart depth signing. He is not going to change the Vikings’ ceiling, but he adds another proven veteran to a locker room that is trying to prove last year was a fluke. Brian Flores gets a guy he can move around and use in packages where opposing quarterbacks have to think an extra half-second before every snap.
Whether Harrison Smith comes back for another season is a related question that is now clearer with this signing. The Vikings can now afford to let the Smith situation play out at its own pace, knowing they have another veteran defensive back type on the roster if things go sideways.
Adams’ one-word reaction to the deal being finalized said it all. “Blessed.”
Whether the Vikings feel that way after the season depends on what version of Adams shows up in September. Either way, he is now the newest reclamation project on a defense that has been running them regularly.
