Drake Maye Enters Year 3 as a Legitimate MVP Candidate After Patriots Super Bowl Run

Drake Maye is no longer a project. He is a problem for the rest of the AFC.
The New England Patriots quarterback burst onto the scene as a legitimate MVP candidate in Year 2 last season, leading the NFL in completion percentage, yards per attempt and passer rating. He also led New England to an appearance in Super Bowl LX. Now he is entering his third year with A.J. Brown joining the roster and the entire league on notice.
This is the kind of development arc that the Patriots paid for when they took him third overall in 2024. Mike Vrabel was hired specifically because of what he could do with a young quarterback. Year 1 was rough. Year 2 was a leap. Year 3 is supposed to be when the player becomes the version of himself that justifies the draft slot, and Maye is right on schedule.
The Patriots are not running the same offense they were two years ago. Vrabel and offensive coordinator have built around Maye’s strengths. He has always had the arm. He has always been a willing thrower. What he developed last year was the timing and the decision-making to operate at NFL speed, and the numbers reflected it.
Adding A.J. Brown takes the ceiling higher. Brown is one of the best wide receivers in football. He is in his prime, he is physical, and he wins contested catches at a rate that quarterbacks dream about. Pairing him with Maye gives New England the kind of QB-WR connection that is rare in the league.
The Patriots also added Will Campbell, TreVeyon Henderson and Corey Durden in recent moves, plus the line and skill positions have been steadily upgraded. The roster around Maye is now one of the best in the AFC.
What about the MVP race? Patrick Mahomes is always in it. Lamar Jackson has won it three times. Josh Allen, Joe Burrow when healthy, and Jared Goff are all in the mix. Maye now has the production and the team success to belong in that conversation. He just needs to keep doing what he did last year.
The Super Bowl LX loss is going to be the motivation. Maye played well in the game but New England came up short. That kind of taste does not leave a competitive player for an entire offseason. It shows up in OTAs, it shows up in training camp, and it shows up in September.
Maye is connecting with Brown already in offseason workouts. That chemistry is the swing factor. If they hit the season clicking, the Patriots’ offense becomes one of the most efficient in football. If it takes a few weeks to build, they will still be good, but they will give up some of the early-season advantage.
The AFC East is going to be a war. The Bills are loaded. The Dolphins are dangerous when healthy. The Jets are unpredictable. The Patriots are now the team that has the most reasonable path to dominating the division, and Drake Maye is the reason why.
Year 3 is when quarterbacks make the jump from good to great. Maye has the team, the receivers, the coach, and now the expectation. The pressure is on, and that is exactly where you want a young star to be.
